WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS & BRIDGES?

Dental crowns?

Dental Crowns are a fixed, artificial tooth-shaped cap that is placed over your natural tooth. They will provide you with reliable protection for your tooth. Crowns can help make your tooth stronger and longer lasting.

Dental bridges?

Dental bridges are used to fill the space created by one or more missing teeth. They are false teeth that are permanently attached to healthy adjacent teeth or implants.

WHY WOULD YOU NEED A CROWN OR BRIDGE?

You may need a crown or bridge if your tooth is badly worn down or fractured and there is not enough of the original tooth structure left to restore any other way.

When do I need dental crown or bridge?

  • To replace large fillings for strength and longevity as these teeth are at high risk of fractures
  • After root canal therapy
  • To protect weak teeth
  • To cover your dental implant
  • For cosmetic reasons such as discoloured teeth
  • To replace missing teeth/tooth

YOUR OPTIONS FOR DENTAL CROWN & BRIDGE

Selecting the right material for your dental crown or bridge involves considering several factors, as various options offer different advantages and disadvantages. These include the restoration’s position in your mouth, the health of the supporting tooth, the available space, and any habits like tooth grinding. Rest assured, your dentist will thoroughly assess your situation and recommend the best material for you.

Common Crown and Bridge Materials:

  • Zirconia: Tooth-coloured, suitable for back teeth and bridges.
  • Gold: Durable for back teeth, but not tooth-coloured.
  • Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM): Can be used anywhere, but less aesthetic for front teeth (recommended mainly for grinders).
  • All Porcelain: Tooth-coloured, ideal for front teeth.
  • Porcelain Fused to Zirconia (PFZ): Tooth-coloured, suitable for front teeth.
  • Composite Resin: Tooth-coloured but weak, primarily for temporary restorations.

During your consultation, your dentist will evaluate your teeth, explain these factors, and recommend the most suitable material to meet your needs and expectations.

POST & CORE CROWNS

If you have insufficient tooth structure remaining to support a crown, a post and core crown can be custom-made to help support the crown.

It consists of 2 parts:

  • The post is a small rod inserted into the root canal of a root canal treated tooth and helps to anchor the overlying core and crown.
  • The core is typically made from metal, replaces the central missing tooth structure and supports the overlying crown.

Because of the design of the post and core crown, it can only be performed on a root canal treated (RCT) tooth.

If a tooth needs to be crowned and requires a post and core, an elective RCT may be required. This means, despite having a normal pulp, RCT needs to be undertaken to allow sufficient retention of the crown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I care for my crown/bridge?

The typical crown will last from 5 to 15 years. Some crowns can last much longer but this is dependent on the material chosen, the condition of the natural tooth and how well you care for your crown/bridge.

It is critical to continue routine flossing and brushing around the crown and beneath the bridge and take care with biting on harder foods.

For more questions about caring for your crowns or bridges, please book in today and ask your friendly dentist!

What if my crown/bridge breaks or falls off?

Temporary crown/bridge is designed to protect your tooth until the permanent crown arrives and is not as strong. Depending on when your permanent crown is being inserted, it may be necessary to visit the dentist to remake or reattach your temporary crown. Please Contact Us On (02) 9680 1212 to determine if this is necessary for you.

If your permanent crown or bridge breaks or falls off, do NOT throw away the pieces. Please book an appointment with your dentist for them to assess whether a simple reattachment or repair can be done. It is not a dental emergency, however it should be addressed promptly to reduce the risk of damage or over-eruption of the natural tooth.

Will it hurt?

At Castle Hill Dental Care, we are fully committed to providing you with not only the best possible treatment but ensuring your visits to our dental clinic are as relaxing and comfortable as possible and your dentist will ensure your tooth is completely numb before beginning treatment.

After the procedure has ended and the anaesthetic has worn off, you may experience some minimal sensitivity with your tooth or soreness around the gums that should not last more than a day or two.

If you are anxious about the procedure, don’t hesitate to tell our dentists, so they can explain your Sleep Dentistry options available at our practice.

How much dental crown cost?

Crown – $700-$2400 depending on the material used.
Bridge – Dependent on the number of teeth involved.

The cost of treatment may exceed this if additional preparation is required prior to making the crown. Your dentist will be able to let you know the estimated cost of treatment after assessing your case.

We understand that this is an expensive investment and can often be difficult to pay upfront. To ensure you can get the treatment you need and when you need it, our clinic offers a range of flexible payment options.

Why should I replace a missing teeth?

In a normal, healthy mouth your teeth are well balanced. However, when you lose a tooth, this balance can be quickly disrupted.

Replacing your missing tooth can help:

  • To prevent adjacent teeth tipping and/or rotating which can cause gum disease, jaw joint problems, change in your bite and uneven wear and tear of your teeth
  • As the teeth shift, the root of your teeth can be exposed which can cause sensitivity to improve your chewing as food can trap in the space and cause discomfort
  • Improve you speech
  • If they are in the smile line, they are aesthetically unpleasant which can affect your self-image and self-esteem.

An alternative to replace missing teeth is with dental implants or dentures.
