What is a denture or a Plate?

Denture or Plate:

At Castle Hill Dental Care, each denture is carefully crafted for every person to ensure a comfortable fit and natural smile.

Denture can help to:

  • Restore the shape of your face
  • Replace single or multiple teeth
  • Improve your ability to eat and speak
  • Protect your remaining teeth from excessive wear
  • Improve your self-esteem

There are different types of dentures.  Can use acrylic, chrome cobalt, and nylon for the fabrication of dentures.  Also, dentures can be stabilized and retained in your mouth via implants.  Please scroll down or call us at 02-96801212 for more information.

Implant-supported Dentures or Overdentures

Implant supported dentures and overdentures are popular alternatives for replacing missing teeth.  Conventional dentures sit on your gum which does not provide enough retention.  These use implants instead of your teeth or gum to secure and keep the denture in place.

Implant supported dentures are usually fitted over 4 or 6 implants.  They are fixed over the implants via screws and can not be removed.  They also know as all on 4 or all on 6.

Overdentures, on the other hand, are fitted on 2, 4, or 6 implants and are removable.  Thus, cleaning and oral hygiene are much easier.  Depending on the number of implants, they use your gum,  jaw bone, and implant to secure and retain your denture.

Why choose an implant supported denture or overdenture over a traditional denture?

  • Slows bone loss in your jaw
  • Minimal speech impediment
  • Significantly more comfortable to help you keep eating the food you love
  • They can be removable or semi-fixed for easy cleaning
  • Better retention and stability
  • Superior comfort and natural look.

Types of Dentures

Full & Immediate Dentures

A full or complete denture replaces all of the teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both.

Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” They are both made of acrylic.  Conventional dentures are fabricated and fitted three to four months after teeth removal.  Therefore, the patients will be without teeth for that time.

On the other hand, we fabricate immediate dentures prior to teeth removal and position them right after teeth removal.  So, you will not be without teeth during healing period.  However, bones and gums shrink, especially during the healing period following tooth removal.  Thus, they need more adjustments to fit them properly.  And, after 3-4 months, immediate dentures require a reline (addition to the base) or fabrication of a new denture.  Call Us Now to find out more.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is used to replace some teeth and is removable.   The base of the plate itself can be metal (chrome cobalt or acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
The teeth and the surrounding tissue are made from acrylic.

Acrylic and teeth come in different shapes & colours.  Therefore, the denture can look as natural as possible.

There are 2 types of partial dentures with metal bases. Partial dentures can be held in place via clasps or internal clasps or magnets (these types are called precision &/or telescopic dentures.  Clasps wrap around the remaining natural teeth and hold the denture in place.  Precision or telescopic dentures use the crown or root of the remaining teeth to hold the denture in place.

These are partial removable dentures supported by 2-6 natural teeth.   with telescopic (cone-shaped) crowns or other forms of attachments which can replace all the missing teeth.

The telescopic dentures work similarly to implant supported dentures but fit over your natural remaining teeth and gums to help support and stabilise the denture.
To do this, your natural teeth are prepared and fitted with custom-made cone-shaped crowns that your dentures can fit over. The cone-shaped crown is fixed in your mouth whilst the denture itself can be removed.

These dentures are:

A cheaper treatment option compared to implant supported dentures

Easy to clean and repair whenever required

Easy to remove and perform daily oral care routines.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures are generally made to last 5-10 years, however, it is recommended that you book regular check-ups as, over time, dentures will deteriorate or become loose due to constant wear and shrinkage of your gums.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Proper care of your dentures will not only ensure they last longer but also help keep your mouth healthy!

  • Never force your dentures in or out.
  • Brush and rinse your dentures twice a day with water and mild liquid soap. Do NOT use toothpaste.
  • Take your dentures out at night before you go to sleep. Keep your cleaned dentures in a dry container overnight.

What do I do if my denture breaks or needs adjustment?

If your denture chips or cracks, call us immediately so we can help determine the best course of action.
